Tassie Oak or Tasmanian Oak is not a species. It is the trade name for a mixture of two or more species from a group of about 8 species with similar appearance and features. The main species included are Mountain Ash, Alpine Ash and Messmate, generally found in Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales.
Warm, dense and resilient, Tasmanian Oak is the preferred hardwood for a wide range of applications. It works extremely well and produces an excellent finish.
Tasmanian Oak is light in colour, varying from straw to reddish brown with intermediate shades of cream to pink. It is recognised for its excellent staining qualities, which allow ready matching with other timbers, finishes or furnishings.
Timber of choice for the flooring at the Melbourne Sports and Acquatic Centre, Albert Park, Tasmanian Oak flooring was used in the eight basketball courts area, in the large badminton courts area and in the gymnasiums.
Tasmanian Oak is used for flooring, panelling, joinery, furniture and general construction.
